26 POINT LU SPOTLIGHT: Debby’s Team: The Mom Team!
A lifelong rower inspired by community, challenge, and opportunity
Debby attended 26 Point LU thanks to a simple invitation — and left feeling energized by the power of rowing to bring people together.
“Rowing gave me a different mindset of what I could do.”
Debby credits Cameron’s enthusiasm for getting her involved. With past experience in indoor rowing events like Ergomania and Crash B’s, she was excited to take on a new challenge — and she loved the atmosphere from the moment she arrived.
She was especially inspired by the wide range of participants, from seasoned adults to juniors, including the Vashon Island Rowing Club youth athletes.
“The intensity and dedication across all ages was amazing,” she shared. Debby also praised how well organized the event was — and appreciated the thoughtful touches, including the gift bags and community spirit throughout the day.
Why the Mission Matters
Debby feels deeply connected to the purpose behind Camp Lucy and the George Pocock Rowing Foundation’s work to expand access to rowing.
She believes it’s especially important for young women to experience the confidence that comes from mastering something unfamiliar — pushing through discomfort, finding strength, and discovering what they’re capable of.
A Personal Connection
Debby rowed at the University of Washington in the early 70’s, before Title IX, when girls’ sports opportunities were limited. Choosing to row at that time was a defining step, one that continues to shape her life today.
She values rowing as a sport where young people can build confidence, belong to a team, and challenge themselves in a supportive environment.
The Impact of 26 Point LU
For Debby, the most meaningful part of the event is the community it creates.
She sees Camp Lucy’s focus on equity and inclusion as essential, and believes 26 Point LU is a reminder that sport can unite people from all backgrounds around a shared love of rowing — and a shared commitment to opportunity.
Thank You, Debby
By showing up, rowing hard, and supporting Camp Lucy, Debby is helping ensure more young people — especially girls — can discover strength, belonging, and possibility through rowing.
