26 POINT LU SPOTLIGHT: Addi’s Team: The Sea Monkeys
When Addi first heard about 26 Point LU, she thought, Why not? It sounds like fun!
An athlete with Pocock Youth Rowing, Addi has been on the water for two years—long enough to know that rowing is better when it’s shared. So, she gathered her friends and family, forming a team they named The Sea Monkeys.
Her aunt and uncle had never touched an erg before, but that didn’t matter. Addi gave them a crash course—how to catch, drive, and finish—and soon they were all laughing, pulling together in rhythm for Camp Lucy.
At the event, the room buzzed with energy. Many teams filled the erg floor, and more were connected online. The music was blasting, and everyone was cheering for one another. Addi and her teammates tried to match the pace of nearby crews, not out of rivalry, but because the challenge made it more fun. “Everyone was having such a good time,” Addi said. “You could really feel that we were all part of something bigger.”
For Addi, that “something bigger” is the cause behind the meters—helping more girls discover rowing through Camp Lucy. “I feel lucky that I get to row and do what I love,” she said. “This is a good way to encourage other girls to try it too.”
By the end of the day, Addi made new friends and had a strong baseline she and her fellow Sea Monkeys wanted to beat the next year, both in meters rowed and money raised. Another Pocock teammate will lead this year's crew, already planning and recruiting more rowers to reach their goal.
Addi's wish for the next 26 Point LU? “To get even more people involved—and make sure every club knows about Camp Lucy.” She thinks that everyone reading this can contribute somehow because whether they choose to wildly cheer, erg, or make a donation, nothing is too small or insignificant when the end goal is so impactful.
