Whether you know a young person playing sports or you played sports as a kid, it is easy to see how a coach influences the athletic experience of a child. The role of a coach is so significant that it even extends beyond sport; a coach can influence a child’s success in school and in life.
Up2Us Sports, a national coalition for sports-based youth development, says it like this: “Highly trained coaches can be the most transformative adults in young people’s lives.” For that reason, the Pocock Foundation has formed a new partnership with the Up2Us Sports program Coach Across America (CAA) to support the placement of 12 coaches in youth rowing programs across the nation. These coaches are specifically recruited to communities where they can have big impact and expand the capacity of current youth rowing programs.
CAA coaches receive more than 40 hours of training, which teach them how to work with youth to increase physical activity, provide nutrition education, combat childhood obesity, and address areas of juvenile delinquency and/or educational enhancement. In addition, CAA coaches receive rowing-specific coach training, peer-to-peer support, and networking opportunities throughout their term of service.
As CAA coaches, they also earn the distinction of joining this country’s national service program, AmeriCorps, which is known to many as the domestic equivalent of the PeaceCorps. The program is funded by the Corporation for National and Community Service, an independent Federal agency based in Washington, DC.
To date, CAA coaches have served approximately 300,000 youth. According to the experts at Up2Us, for each $1 invested in programs like CAA, up to $13 is returned to society through savings in health care, school absenteeism, and crime costs.
The Pocock Foundation believes this kind of coaching leadership in youth rowing programs will help transform our sport.
