Sometimes, the most important work of our organization is done in the background. Barbara Kelly is our Accounting Specialist and runs all the numbers behind the scenes to ensure we can continue to operate at our best. We couldn't do this great work without Barbara constantly entering and analyzing our finances.
Here's what Barbara had to say about being a part of the foundation, her love for rowing and how she stays active:
How long have you been part of the GPRF?
I started working for GPRF in July of 2019
How does your position impact the GPRF? I handle and process all the financial transitions for GPRF, PRC and RRC as their accounting specialist. As such I support the hard work of many people so that we are able to get youth on the water and keep our boat house programs running.
Where and when did you start rowing? I started rowing in 2013 with PRC Adult Learn to Row
What is your favourite memory of rowing? That is a hard one, it is a toss-up between seeing my first sunrise on the water with Mt. Rainer in view and beating my husband in a PRC MST mixed quad in RFTC 2017. My quad consisted of a group that had never rowed together before that race and the average age in my boat was higher than the MST boat. Yet we beat them raw time. I have to admit our bow seat was a ringer who was taking a break from the MST program at the time.
Who inspires you the most in the sport? Many of the MST rowers because of their commitment to the sport and my old PRC Sculling coach Margot Shumway -an Olympian and amazing coach. What she said just clicked for me. I really loved her analogies she used to help visualize how to fix my stroke.
In life? Maya Angelou, late American poet and most courageous and inspirational person that I have ever met.
How has your rowing experience changed during COVID-19 At first I couldn’t get in any boats because we were all shut down. I was really miserable. But now, thanks to the hard work of the PRC staff, I have gotten out both in club singles and a double with my husband, and it truly has helped me cope with all that is going on during this pandemic.
What advice would you give to someone considering rowing for the first time? Try it. You will love it!!!
Do you have a favourite workout? I don’t really workout. I just try to stay active at 58 years old. I hike, ride my bike and row as much as possible. Those are my workouts.
