Growing Rowing in the Northwest

The Pocock Foundation is a strong community of volunteers, donors, staff and, of course, rowers! Each year, we reach literally thousands of current and future rowers, plus rowing fans through various events, programs and community initiatives.

Drawing on the life and legacy of George Pocock, the Pocock Foundation believes in the transformative power of rowing and endeavor to make rowing available to as many people as possible.

Please look below for our staff directory, Board and leadership team, and a roster of our dedicated and talented coaches.

Matthew Lacey

Executive Director

Matthew Lacey began serving as the Executive Director of the Pocock Foundation in 2012. In that role, he sets vision for all the staff, manages the broad scope of resources held by the Pocock Foundation, and serves as a voice for the sport of rowing in the Pacific Northwest. Matt received his Master’s in Public Administration from Seattle University in 2007 and began his work as the director of the Pocock Rowing Center in 2008. His coaching experience comes from several area programs, including the Lakeside School, Green Lake Crew, and the Everett Rowing Association. His 27 years of rowing, coaching, and in the Pacific Northwest have given him a passion for the life-changing power of the sport. Outside the office, you can find Matt at the stove with a dish towel over his shoulder preparing fabulous cuisine for his wife and two boys or a whole host of their family and friends. You might also see him traipsing through the woods amidst a camping trip. Or, you’ll spot him trying to run on the treadmill at the Pocock Rowing Center. It’s less a run, more a speedy shuffle.

His gregarious heart and passion for rowing helps John lead the board of the Pocock Foundation to have bigger vision for and impact on the region. Rowing has played a pivotal role in the growth of two of his family members, a niece who rows at University of California Berkeley and cousin who captains the women’s Varsity 8 at Wesleyan University. He speaks passionately about these intelligent, unselfish, accomplished and confident young women and they motivate him to serve on the Pocock Foundation Board today.

School is back in session, so we caught up with our favorite, retired SAAS teacher, Bill Woodman, for tips on how to be a more effective and efficient learner. Here’s what he suggests!
