Third Annual Kossev Symposium:

Innovative Leadership in Rowing and Sport – A Comprehensive Coaching Conference
November 19-20, 2011
Seattle, Washington

The Kossev Consortium, a program of the George Pocock Rowing Foundation, hosted the third annual Kossev Symposium. This year’s conference was hosted in partnership with the University of Washington’s Center for Athletic Leadership. Attended by over 80 coaches and administrators, the event is the largest rowing conference on the west coast and offered coaching development for all levels of coaches.

The theme of this year’s conference was Innovative Leadership. In sport, leadership is about having a depth of knowledge but also having the tools to share that knowledge with athletes and staff. The sessions provided attendees with theory and research from experts but also support the development of practical application of coaching and leadership skills. Innovation stems from being well-grounded in the fundamentals of sport while being willing to take risks and chart new directions. The late Emil Kossev was a highly innovative leader in rowing, and this year’s conference hopefully sparked the imagination of a new generation of athletic leaders.

Topics included youth development in sport, biomechanics, performance psychology, and physiology with round table discussions on sustainable programming, fundraising, and organizational development.

Presentations by:
• Dr. Valery Kleshnev, Ph.D., world renowned rowing science expert and Director of Biorow
• Dr. Dan Tripps, Ph.D., Director for the Center for the Study of Sport & Exercise at Seattle University
• Sara Lopez, M.Ed., Co-Director for University of Washington’s Center for Leadership in Athletics
• Dr. Kevin Alschuler, Ph.D., University of Washington psychologist specializing in rehabilitation and performance

About Emil Kossev

From the time he arrived in the United States in 1992 to the time of his death, Emil worked passionately to advance the cause of amateur athletics in the United States and Canada. As a rowing coach, he built a successful high performance rowing program with limited resources at the Pocock Rowing Center (PRC) based on his knowledge of science and love of the sport. He trained numerous athletes who earned spots on the US National Rowing Team, with 28 of them medaling in international competition. He was a pioneer in the integration of computer software and high performance testing technology into the training regimen.

Even when he left the Pocock Center to become the High Performance Technology Advisor for the Canadian Olympic Team, he remained a champion for finding stable, sustainable funding for rowing coaches, and continued his association with Seattle and the HP program he founded at the PRC. In Canada, he directed his efforts at training coaches to integrate sports performance technology into their regular training and coaching. As a tireless advocate of amateur athletes and coaches, Emil touched the lives of many in the sporting world.

The George Pocock Rowing Foundation has established the Kossev Endowment to honor his life’s work. The goal of the endowment will be to provide a permanent, financially stable platform to support the furtherance of Emil’s goals. When fully funded, the endowment will provide an income stream necessary to provide a sustainable level of resources and technological support necessary for high performance rowing coaches to experience success and personal stability.
